TyrFil gains sustainability boost in 50th anniversary year
Polyurethane tyres were first developed during the Second World War, when German scientist Otto Bayer utilised polyurethane as a replacement for expensive rubber. But the world hat to wait until 1971 for this material to become an effective flatproofing solution. We know this solution as TyrFil, and this year Carlisle TyrFil celebrates the 50th Anniversary of its signature brand, the world’s first polyurethane tyre fill material intended to flatproof tyres.
TyrFil has become an industry standard in tyre fill flatproofing over the past five decades and is utilised in over 65 countries. Carlisle TyrFil is proud to be the proven supplier to the world’s top equipment manufacturers and claims the most OEM tyre fill approvals in the industry. TyrFil became a Carlisle brand following Carlisle Companies Incorporated’s acquisition of Accella Performance Materials in 2017.
Eliminating costly down time
Rendering tyres virtually ‘flat-free’ on the job, TyrFil enables off-the-road (OTR) equipment to drive over typical work site debris, such as sharp rocks, nails, glass, and rebar, that would otherwise leave machinery vulnerable to dangerous and costly tyre punctures. TyrFil can be pumped into any pneumatic tyre to replace all of the air with a resilient, synthetic elastomer core that eliminates flats and offers super shock absorption, ensuring a smoother ride for equipment operators while vastly reducing tyre wear, tear, and denigration. Despite cuts and punctures, filled tyres will keep performing – increasing productivity and eliminating costly downtime for field operators.
Carlisle TyrFil positions its product as “the optimal flatproofing technology for the construction, mining, materials handling, equipment rental, waste management, military, and agricultural industries.” In order to meet industry demands, the TyrFil offering has evolved from one general-purpose formula to a comprehensive product portfolio. TyrFil now comes in a variety of durometers to ensure that the type of fill can closely fit the application, from a softer fill for comfort and deflection to a harder fill for slow moving equipment with high pressure requirements.
“TyrFil has proudly led the tyre flatproofing market for 50 years, offering operators and commercial and industrial fleet managers a host of advantages related to shock resistance and cushioning, wear, abrasion, durability, traction, and cost,” says Matt Pearson, vice-president of global sales for Carlisle TyrFil. “The brand has a long legacy as the pioneer in tyre flatproofing and processing equipment technologies and has laid the foundation for all future polyurethane fill innovation, based on science, customer service and scalability.”
Carlisle TyrFil says that with more than 500 years of combined tyre fill experience in our sales and technical teams, no other tyre flatproofing company in the industry can match its level of innovation, product offering, or technical support. Since 1971, the company’s facilities have processed over 1 billion pounds (453.6 million kg) of material.
Drive towards sustainable practices
During the past two decades, Carlisle TyrFil has introduced next-generation technology that significantly reduces the usage of oil, petrochemicals, toxic metals, and other environmentally harmful compounds. This drive towards adopting sustainable manufacturing practices within the OTR tyre industry continues in 2021 with the introduction of the latest extension to Carlisle TyrFil’s Recycling Technology line-up. The new patented AutoFil-GenII processing pump can mix virgin tyre fill with rubber crumb, PU grind, or both rubber crumb/PU grind, while delivering maximum processing speeds and an enhanced visual data interface through a monitor with an improved HMI touchscreen capability.
“TyrFil’s advanced AutoFil-GenII strengthens Carlisle’s commitment to superior flatproofing performance, sustainability, and materials handling best practices,” adds Pearson. “For the past 50 years, the TyrFil brand has made eco-supportive product development a top and long-term strategic business priority. The AutoFil-GenII is an integral new development in this continued heritage and commitment to putting environmental protection front and centre to our business.”
