Goodyear tyre supplier to BMW M2 Cup
The BMW M2 CS Racing is the new entry-level model in the BMW M Motorsport product portfolio, and the car has its own race series. BMW M Motorsport is collaborating with motorsport agency tolimit to bring the BMW M2 Cup to European circuits this year. Each of the identical cars competing in the series will race on Goodyear tyres.
“With Goodyear, we have gained a reliable partner who not only qualitatively meets the demands of a one-make cup, but also fully supports the promotion concept,” comments Jörg Michaelis, tolimit co-founder and BMW M2 Cup project manager.
The BMW M2 Cup allows rookies from junior racing series and karting to move up the racing ladder to compete in powerful rear wheel drive cars. Goodyear will supply the M2 CS racers with slick and rain tyres in size 265/660 R18. Alexander Kühn, Goodyear car motorsport product manager EMEA, comments that the his team drew on a “very wide range of experience” when developing the tyre. “On the one hand, there is the very intensive experience with the M2’s predecessor from BMW customer sport, but on the other hand, there is also the breadth of our portfolio of racing tyres: We can also draw on experience with an extensive range of specifications in this dimension, which provides us with valuable data when developing the exclusive racing tyre for the BMW M2 Cup.”
Long-standing cooperation
Goodyear’s involvement in the BMW M2 Cup continues its long-standing cooperation with the car maker. “We have a seven-year relationship with BMW in the 240i Cup on the Nordschleife alone. Before that, we had an intensive development partnership in the BMW M3 GT2 race programme at the Nürburgring 24h and other international endurance series,” comments Kühn.
The 2021 season of the BMW M2 Cup consists of 12 races that will take place during six of this year’s DTM race events in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands. The opening round of the BMW M2 Cup begins at the Norisring in Germany on 2 July.
