Bespoke Pirelli tyres for Ferrari’s first 21-inch fitment
The traditional collaboration between Pirelli and Ferrari continues with the development of bespoke P Zero tyres for the Maranello-based manufacturer’s Monza SP1 and SP2. The new Ferrari Monza models will wear Pirelli P Zero rubber in size 275/30 R21 at the front and 315/30 R21 at the back.
This is the first time that the 21-inch size has been selected for a Ferrari, and it presented Pirelli’s engineers with the challenge of offering the usual levels of stiffness, comfort and performance despite the record size. Weight considerations were also a priority.
Instead of employing the traditional reinforced textiles, Pirelli’s engineers redesigned the bead area to maintain lateral rigidity while minimising weight, and Pirelli reports that this solution has saved 1.2 kilogrammes.
When developing the Monza SP1 and SP2, Ferrari drew inspiration from racing barchettas of the 1950s, and this new interpretation of the format comes with a 596 kW V12 engine capable of propelling the Monza to 100 km/h from a standstill in just 2.9 seconds and on to 200 km/h in a further five seconds.
