It is no secret that Continental and Bandvulc have been working together for decades. So it was also no surprise to learn that the subject of a possible takeover arose as long as 12 years ago. However, the round of talks that resulted in the sale agreement were instigated by Bandvulc managing director Patrick O’Connell during a meeting at the CV show in 2013. In the two or so years that followed the two firms say they grew together before a final deal was completed in July 2016.
Headway Tyres Europe, the European subsidiary of the Asian manufacturer Hengyu Technology Group, has achieved C rated wet grip and rolling resistance with its ultra-high performance tyre, Horizon HU901. It narrowly missed taking first place in the ADAC’s test of 15 size 215/65 R16 98H tyres, but the Cooper Zeon 4XS Sport nevertheless received the same ‘good’ rating as the victor – the only tyre to do so. Austrian partner association the ÖAMTC and Switzerland’s TCS gave the Cooper tyre a rating of ‘highly recommended’ in their versions of the test, and Cooper Tire Europe has expressed its pleasure in the motoring organisations’ positive evaluation.
It’s summer tyre test season, or at least the time of year when the results are published. German car magazine Autozeitung has evaluated ten size 215/55 R17 W/Y products. Its decision to only test tyres available for retail purchase at the time means that two newcomers, the Bridgestone Turanza T001 Evo and the Continental PremiumContact 6, aren’t included amongst the ten. Instead, the two brands were represented by each tyre’s respective predecessor.
In a 3-2 vote, the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) yesterday determined that the US tyre industry hasn’t been materially injured by imports of truck and bus tyres from China, nor is it threatened by these imports. According to a study published by environmental network the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), tiny plastic particles from tyres and other products such as synthetic clothing could contribute up to 31 per cent of the 9.5 million tonnes of plastic released into the ocean each year. The report suggests that tyre waste generated by abrasion during use accounts for 28.3 per cent of these primary microplastics. Tyre particles and other waste reach the ocean through road runoff, the path that 66 per cent of microplastics are said to take on their journey to the ocean.
