Michelin reaffirms opposition to 3mm replacement
While some manufacturers lobby for tyres to be replaced at 3 or even 4 mm, Michelin maintains that the current legal limit of 1.6 mm is “perfectly suited” to modern motoring and has reaffirmed its opposition to a change in the legislation. Indeed, during the course of the Paris Motor Show, Michelin’s top executives will be making this argument with journalists, OEMs and of course the public.
There are many reasons for this argument (Michelin presents at least four key points), but arguably the most interesting from the tyre business’ perspective is Michelin’s observation that new tyres “already exhibit large differences in performance between brands and manufacturers, models and dimensions”. While this is clearly a challenge premium competitors, Michelin goes on to point out Premium tyres may, with a tread depth of 1.6 mm, be more efficient than a new budget tyre.
Tyres & Accessories is attending the Paris Motor Show, which opens its doors to the public on Saturday 1 October. Look out for further coverage of the 3mm replacement story in future issues.
