Fire at Port Talbot tyre recycling plant

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service reports that it and partner agencies have been working to extinguish a fire at a tyre recycling plant in Aberafan, Port Talbot. Emergency services were first called to the Egan Tyre Recycling premises following a call shortly before 11pm on 12 July, and at its height 21 fire appliances and 100 personnel were on site dealing with the incident.

“The incident is particularly complex in that it involves deep seated fires within a large quantity of waste tyre product but emergency services teams, partner agencies and private contractors are making excellent progress to deal with the incident but this may take some time,” reported Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service yesterday afternoon.

The smoke plume arising from the site is being closely monitored by Natural Resources Wales and Public Health Wales using the National Air Quality Network monitoring systems and on site staff. Cordons are in place around the incident and Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service advises the public to stay clear of the area.
