Lights, camera, engine detox

Mercury Car Centre was chosen for a visit by ITN in order to film its EDT engine detox process for a new IMI video

An ITN production team visited Mercury Car Centre in Brentwood in early February to shoot footage of EDT’s engine detox for the new Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) film on cutting-edge automotive businesses.

Neil Hutchinson, owner of Mercury Car Centre, said: “We’ve been really impressed with EDT – the performance improvements for customers, the revenue potential for us and the environmental benefits – but I never expected to have a film crew in my workshop. With emissions and fuel consumption such hot topics in the industry at the moment, I hope it raises awareness of this fantastic engine decontamination service.”

David Holmes, managing director at EDT Automotive, said: “As a longstanding IMI member, I am honoured that they chose us to represent modern workshop service providers. Winning the Green Apple award in November brought us a lot of attention and fingers crossed this film will give us another lift. Mercury is a top notch independent garage, one of the first to join our network, so they fully deserve the kudos of being in it.”

The 60-minute film, hosted by ITV news presenter and Strictly Come Dancing winner Natasha Kaplinksy, will premiere at the IMI Annual Dinner on 10 March.

The hand-built EDT machine cleans petrol or diesel engines with an environmentally friendly solution. It takes just 13 minutes to remove up to half a litre of black sludge that doesn’t come out in an ordinary oil change.

The results are close to doing a manual engine strip, with fuel economy increased by up to 20 per cent, power increased by up to 6bhp and torque increased by up to 7ft-lb. Harmful emissions are also significantly reduced: CO by an average 66 per cent and diesel smoke by an average 58 per cent.
