Michelin closing Pneu Laurent (Germany) in 2016

The announcements form part of a suite of manufacturing changes Michelin has enacted across Europe, which include the closure of Pneu Larent (Germany) and the closure of Michelin’s Italian retreading operations in Alessandria, alongside strategic investments in the wider Italian tyre manufacturing sector.

In addition to closing its Ballymena truck tyre factory, Michelin has announced plan to shutter its Pneu Laurent location in Oranienburg, Germany at the end of 2016 and shift all of its activities to Michelin’s Avallon, France retreading location.

This decision, like the Ballymena closure is said to be due to the serious difficulties experienced in the European retread market.  Michelin employs 180 people at the Oranienburg site.

In September Tyres & Accessories reported that Michelin’s second line Encore range of truck tyre retreads are being rebranded as Laurent.

Together with adjustments taking place in Italy (as well as the aforementioned UK and German restructuring), Michelin Group acknowledged that its accounts will record a “non-recurring impairment loss” of around 280 million euros in 2015.
