Government grant to buy electric bikes

Consumers will be able to receive a Government grant of up to £1,500 off the sale price of electric motorcycles and scooters, in a bid to encourage the purchase of zero emission two wheeler vehicles, the Government has announced.

Stephen Latham, head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) welcomed the news, stating “this is a positive announcement from the Government, which will not only encourage the distribution and purchase of electric two wheelers but also aid their engineering and technological development”.

Latham continued “we have been working closely with the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) to ensure that the subsidies provided for other road vehicles, such as cars, vans and buses, would also be emulated for motorcycles and scooters.

“Today’s announcement that up to £7.5 million will be set aside to boost the purchase of these vehicles shows that the NMDA’s lobbying has paid off and we are thankful that the environmental and economic importance of helping bikers to move to electric vehicles has been acknowledged and will now be in line with other zero emission vehicle schemes.”
