Buoyant motorcycle sales in March
Figures from the Motor Cycle Industry Association reveal that sales were buoyant in March. “It is extremely positive to see that the motorcycle market was up by an impressive 18.2 per cent last month following February’s -3.6 per cent decline”, said Stephen Latham, Head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) which represents motorcycle retailers across the UK.
Over 2244 more units were registered than in March 2013 – the month which is traditionally linked to high volumes of sales following the 14-plate change.
Sales of sub 50cc motorcycles remained low, however most other sectors performed well achieving higher sales volumes compared to this time last year. Naked machines excelled with an increase of 45 per cent – registering 3334 units over last year’s sales of 2297 machines. With demand for machines from the 651-1000cc range, there is a clear indication that the more experienced biker is returning to an improving market.
Latham continued, “The top-ten motorcycle brands all performed well in March, suggesting for the first time in many months that these makes have exceeded sales over the fast emerging Chinese lightweight budget motorcyclists that have taken more market share.
“The top three brands were Honda selling 2691 units, Yamaha selling 1831 units, and BMW selling 1477 motorcycles in March.
“The outlook for the motorcycle market is looking encouraging and we anticipate the general confidence in the economy and (hopefully) continued good weather will drive riders to consider their needs for upgrading their motorcycles.”
