Over three-quarters of European tyre population under-inflated: Bridgestone

Data from Bridgestone’s Safety Campaign 2012 has revealed that 78.3 per cent of tyres on the 28,700 cars inspected across Europe throughout the year were under-inflated to varying degrees. Additionally, 25.6 per cent of the tyre population was found to be worn below 1.6mm. The company completes a survey during its safety check workshops across Europe each year, and the latest data shows an increase in the number of tyres found to be under-inflated.

Falken ups grassroots motorsport engagement with Ministox driver

An 11-year old racing driver has gained tyre brand Falken’s support alongside her first victory in the National Ministox series. The Japanese manufacturer supplies tyres to Catherine Harris as part of its expanding presence in UK grass roots motorsport. The brand recently announced its intention to back the ANWCC Under-17s AutoSOLO and the K11 Micra Rally series, and is using this involvement as a way of raising the awareness of the importance of tyres to the next generation of car drivers.

Maxxis supporting Babe Michelle’s drifting ambitions

Maxxis is supporting the drifting ambitions of one of its promotional team of Maxxis Babes. Michelle Westby has set her sights on achieving her semi-pro licence by the end of 2013 having taken up drifting a year ago and the tyre supplier that originally made her part of its motorsport marketing presence is supporting her driving ambitions with sponsorship, tyres and website assistance. Maxxis International managing director Derek McMartin says the relationship is “proving to be mutually beneficial.”

Amateurish Bruno clip a viral sensation

Back in 2011, Tyres & Accessories brought you news of Bruno, the mastiff cross undergoing ‘therapy’ in New Zealand after his anger issues resulted in the destruction of tyres fitted to two police cars and another vehicle. While we don’t know whether Bruno responded to treatment or if he’s still barking mad, it has come to our attention that a local news report of the tyre-tearing dog has gone viral.

Lanxess opens first Russian facility

Less than a month after inaugurating its 100,000 tonne per annum butyl rubber plant in Singapore and six weeks after launching a new curing bladder facility in Brazil, Lanxess has celebrated the opening of another production site that will serve the tyre and automotive industries. The company’s first facility in Russia, a polymer-bound rubber additives plant operated by its Rhein Chemie subsidiary, officially opened on 4 July, creating around 40 jobs; a second facility at the plant site in Lipetsk, which will produce bladders for use in tyre production, will open in 2016.

Dunlop to supply Flybe expansion

Europe’s largest regional airline Flybe has selected Birmingham manufacturer Dunlop Aircraft Tyres to supply its expanding fleet of Embraer jets. Dunlop has been awarded an exclusive five-year deal to supply new and retreaded nose and mainwheel tyres for Flybe’s fleet of Embraer 175 aircraft and radial nosewheel tyres for the carrier’s Embraer 195s. The deal continues a long-standing relationship with the airline, while Dunlop is currently present on many other Embraer aircraft.

Uniwheels, a long time supplier of alloy wheels to Honda Access, has been given a “Honda Access Europe Award” for its excellent overall performance in 2012. This is the second consecutive Honda Access award that the Uniwheels Production (Poland) Sp z.o.o. operation has received.

Silverstone tyre failures a result of high kerbs and unconventional usage – Pirelli

Pirelli has released two statements to explain the reasons behind the spate of tyre failures at the British grand prix. The exclusive tyre supplier said that the “sophisticated” asymmetric construction of the current P Zero Formula One slicks meant that tyre management methods employed by teams, such as mounting rear tyres on the opposite side to that for which they were designed, reduced tyre pressures, and extreme cambers had combined with the high kerbs at Silverstone to cause the problems, which Pirelli Motorsport director Paul Hembery described as “completely unexpected”. While Hembery was adamant that the “2013 range of tyres, used in the correct way, is completely safe”, he accepted that Pirelli had “underestimated” the effects that these unconventional running techniques would have on the tyres, and had declined to forbid mounting tyres the wrong way around. In future, Pirelli is seeking, with the agreement of FIA, FOM, the teams and the drivers, greater control over the ways in which its F1 tyres are utilised.

Audi extends Conti OE fitment

Continental says it “recently received a whole raft of approvals” from Audi. The ContiSportContact 5 summer tyre has been approved for both the Audi A3 and A8, while in future the A6, A6 Allroad, A7 and RS 6 Quattro will be equipped with the sportier ContiSportContact 5 P. In all, five tyre sizes for 19 to 21-inch rims have been homologated. The Continental tyres fitted as original equipment on most of the above Audi models will bear the letters ‘AO’ (Audi Original parts) on the sidewall, and in future these tyres will also be available to order from Audi dealerships and specialist tyre dealers. Tyres for the Audi RS will bear the sidewall marking ‘R01’.

Zeisser appointed Yokohama’s North American head of OE sales

Yokohama Tire Corporation has hired Andrew Zeisser as its new director of OE sales. In this role, Zeisser will be responsible for the company’s original equipment business in North America and will lead Yokohama Tire Corporation’s OE sales, engineering and quality functions. He will be based at the company’s Detroit, Michigan office.

Michelin Clio Cup at Croft this weekend

Following a highly successful debut at Snetterton in Norfolk seven weeks ago, the new-for-2013 Michelin Clio Cup Series with Protyre will resume its season at North Yorkshire's Croft Circuit this weekend, 6/7 July, with the third and fourth races of the inaugural campaign. Parts Alliance wins £4 million Micheldever prime supply partner deal

The Parts Alliance has announced its reappointment as prime supply partner to Micheldever for the next two years. The parts distributor will supply Micheldever’s national network of 61 fast fit centres with a full range of vehicle parts, covering braking, steering and suspension, emissions and general service and repair products. The Alliance estimates the deal is worth over £2 million per year.

Kenda announces 2013 production capacity increase plans

Kenda Rubber Industrial Co has reported its intention to increase its global production capacity for passenger car tyres by 50 per cent in 2013. The company will manufacture 38,000 units per day by the end of 2013 in order to meet rising market demand, with the increases coming in both its home market of Taiwan and in two Chinese factories. These include the Tianjin factory, which produced its first prototype tyre in May.
