The UK seasonal tyre market is larger than you think

The UK tyre industry has been taking deliberate steps to develop its winter tyre market for over a decade. As a result winter tyre sales constitute an increasingly important market position (see Related News in the subscriber section of this article). At the same time, the evidence Tyrepress.com has seen suggests all-season tyre sales have been growing at an even faster rate and could even be outperforming winter tyres when measured across complete 12 month periods. Back in May (see Tyres & Accessories May, page 18) we reported on the latest relevant research produced by market analysts GfK, which suggested winter tyre sales were accelerating faster than ever. This month, in keeping with our winter versus all-season theme, we expand on this data to include a number of all-season details and compare it with the conclusion drawn by our other sources.

Parents fail school tyre safety ‘test’

Motorists carry their most precious cargo when making the school run, but that’s no guarantee that the vehicles they use will be fit for duty. Time spent by Falken at Moorfield Primary School in Shropshire uncovered a high number of illegal tyres – eight out of the 25 parents’ cars checked were fitted with tyres that didn’t make the grade. The school car park check also identified one tyre with a nail in it and a further two had tyres over ten years old. In the interests of safety, Falken provided vouchers for free tyres and fitting to the first five owners with illegally worn or damaged tyres.

New language, domain for Double Coin/CMA site

Visitors to Double Coin’s American web presence are invited to say ¡Hola! to a new Spanish language site. The tyre maker and the China Manufacturers Alliance have introduced the option in recognition of demand for information in Spanish from within both North and Central America. To further emphasise the site’s status as a source of information for the region, the existing www.DoubleCoin-us.com domain is being phased out and replaced by a new address, www.DoubleCoinTires.com. Visitors using the old address will be automatically redirected to the site, and Spanish speaking visitors can access the page in their language directly at www.Espanol.DoubleCoinTires.com.

Blackcircles launches first Tesco Click & Fit in Bletchley

The first “Click & Fit” tyre service has launched at Tesco in Bletchley. The service allows customers to order tyres and make a fitting appointment through Tesco’s tyre partner Blackcircles’s website, before dropping off their car at a “Pit Stop” fitting bay at the supermarket. Tesco told local news source the Milton Keynes Citizen that customers could expect discounted tyre prices and Clubcard reward scheme points as extra incentives for using the service. An idea in the works since the companies partnered on the Tesco-Tyres.com website in January 2011, the potential for rolling out this model nationwide is clear, given the supermarket giant’s UK prominence.

2014 debut for Sumitomo’s ‘ultra pure’ tyres

Sumitomo Rubber Industries’ recent development of a highly purified form of natural rubber may take on tyre form as early as next year. The Japanese manufacturer says it plans to utilise its UPNR (Ultra Pure Natural Rubber) in several tyres, starting with new ranges scheduled for launch in 2014.

Tyre trio make Fortune Global 500 list

Fortune has released this year’s ‘Global 500’ list, which names the world’s largest companies in respect to turnover for the fiscal year ending before or on 31 March 2013. While no tyre firm could hold a candle to Royal Dutch Shell, whose revenues of US$481.7 billion propelled it into the number one position, three leading tyre majors made it onto the list.

Pirelli hungry for 2014 F1 test schedule confirmation

Pirelli travels to the Hungaroring with the new mash-up tyre selection sampled by 2013 drivers at Silverstone’s Young Driver Test last week this weekend. Consisting of the 2013 compounds in the tread and the 2012 Kevlar-belted construction, Pirelli channelled its inner Thom Yorke, pronouncing there were no alarms and no surprises following the “reliable” testing of the ‘new’ tyres’ performance. Pirelli’s Motorsport director Paul Hembery was diplomatic following the Young Driver Test, opining that “everybody achieved their objectives” at Silverstone. Thanking the teams for their cooperation in running tyre tests as required by Pirelli, he said the tyres had run “reliably throughout the three days”, and maintained the hope that they would allow teams to use “an interesting mix of strategies for the races ahead”. Yet with teams already possessing “a lot of information about the shape and deformation of this tyre from the previous season,” according to Hembery, it seems likely that these new compromise tyres could reduce tactical malleability. That said, the Hungarian grand prix will allow some focus on tyre strategy, with limited overtaking opportunities and low average speeds, so perhaps there could be more to talk about from a tyre point of view than Tyrepress.com anticipates.

Vipal rewarded for export market diversification

Vipal has been recognised for its activities in international markets in an awards ceremony hosted by Porto Alegre trade association ADVB. President Arlindo Paludo received the 2013 Export Award for Market Diversification on 8 July, joining other exporters from the state of Rio Grande do Sul in a variety of categories. Paludo said: “This award is one of the fruits of Vipal’s entire 40 year history. We have always bet on developing products featuring high quality and technology, and have never set environmental preservation aside. It’s a great pleasure to see important competitions like the Export Awards recognizing that.”

R&J Strang integrates Cam’s UniSerV platform

Hamilton and East Lothian’s R&J Strang Tyre Services is introducing Cam Systems’ Cameo and UniSerV platforms in July. The company, which supplies car, truck, earthmover and specialist tyres, is aiming to streamline its job sheet processing, while managing its truck casings “from cradle to grave” via UniSerV’s Integrated Casing Management module. R&J Strang also wants to exert greater control over products and pricing via the Online Tyre Catalogue, while simplifying its stock management and invoicing processes.

Cooper Rongcheng strike is delaying shipments

Representatives of Cooper Tire’s Findlay, Ohio corporate headquarters have confirmed that the company is facing strike action at its Rongcheng, China plant. In answer to Tyres & Accessories questions, a company spokesperson confirmed that as a result the dispute the factory is “in communication with customers…regarding product supply”. No further details of what this means in practice have been released. However T&A has seen once such customer communication, which suggests the strike, which has reportedly been going on for around a month, is resulting in the delay of export shipments.

Goldman Sachs buys Apollo shares

On July 22, Goldman Sachs Singapore PTE acquired 2,768,258 Apollo Tyres shares on the National Stock Exchange of India for Rs 69.70 per share. This gives the investment banking and securities firm a 0.55 per cent holding in the tyre maker.

Delticom reports good Q2 growth

Preliminary figures published by online tyre retailer Delticom show improved performance in what the company calls a “challenging market environment.” During the first half of the year, the company achieved revenues of €212.2 million, up 9.8 per cent year-on-year. During the April to June quarter, Delticom’s revenues amounted to €130.9 million, a 21.5 per cent year-on-year increase. Against the market trend, second quarter revenues in the company’s core E-Commerce division rose 24.0 per cent year-on-year to €128.9 million; division revenues in the first half of 2013 were €206.4 million, an increase of 11.6 per cent.
