Union members ratify Bridgestone contract
Members of the United Steelworkers (USW) voted to ratify a new four-year contract with Bridgestone Americas, which covers 4,500 workers at six facilities. Following several months of negotiations, the union and tyre maker reached an agreement on a new contract in late July, and USW union members have now voted to accept the new agreement by a margin of 2 to 1.
“This contract represents a significant step forward,” said USW International secretary-treasurer Stan Johnson, who oversaw the talks for the union. “It provided for wage and pension improvements while protecting health care coverage. Substantial gains were also made for those hired in recent years, which was another goal set by the bargaining committees.”
The agreement covers workers at the tyre maker’s Akron, Des Moines, Russellville, LaVergne, Warren County and Bloomington plants.
