Continental Tyres takes Mercedes-Benz World to Contidrom
Continental Tyres recently invited Mercedes-Benz World representatives and driving instructors to experience its Contidrom testing facility in Hanover, Germany. Utilising Contidrom’s 2km wet handling track, Continental set out to demonstrate the difference between premium and budget tyres on a Mercedes-Benz C-Class among other tests.
The Mercedes-Benz World drivers also got to experience the impact of tyre tread depth on a range of A-Class models. While the legal limit is 1.6mm, Continental advises that tyres should be changed when the depth is worn to 3mm as that is when performance is rapidly reduced. With three A-Class models, the only difference between the cars being the tread depth of the tyre (1.6mm, 3mm and 8mm), drivers took it in turns to drive each of the cars around the circuit including an artificially soaked section, increasing their speed with each lap.
The day concluded by highlighting Continental’s “best in braking” credentials by showcasing the AIBA facility (Automated Indoor Braking Analyser); the only fully automated indoor brake facility in the World. With the addition of AIBA Continental now boasts a wide range of test methods, allowing for trials that would otherwise be near impossible under normal traffic conditions.
Since October last year Mercedes-Benz World has seen the supply of high performance Continental tyres for all Mercedes-Benz vehicles used in the driving experiences both on the circuits and challenging 4×4 off-road terrain. As the lead tyre development partner for Mercedes-AMG division, Continental believes it is well placed to serve the varied demands of the entire Mercedes-Benz World driving experience range, further demonstrated at the German tyre manufacturers test facility where Mercedes-Benz World were shown the extensive testing procedures every tyre goes through before a final approval.
Peter Robb, brand manager, Continental Tyre Group, said: “Continental is delighted to be partnered with Mercedes-Benz World. By showcasing our expertise to one of the most prestigious brands in the World, we set the future in motion and create the ultimate combination of products incorporating high performance and a shared passion for ultimate safety.”
