Ghana sets used tyre record straight
Ghana’s National Road Safety Commission wishes to clarify comments it recently made, comments that were widely interpreted as heralding a ban on part-worn tyres within the country.
While most of the news attributed to the NRSC – that ‘C’ temperature rated tyres are unsuitable for use in the African nation, a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm must be adhered to and tyres older than four years old (from the date of manufacture) may not be mounted on a vehicle – was correct, the commission emphasises that its comments made regarding the banning of tyre imports were directed solely towards sub-standard tyres and not used tyres in general. Part-worn tyres may continue to be exported to Ghana.
In a release, the NRSC explained that “a substandard tyre is not a question of their description as new or used but rather their compliance with the specific requirements provided by Regulation 62 of the Road Traffic Regulation.”
