Pirelli to enlarge warehousing at Carlisle facility
On 25 April, Pirelli Tyres Limited submitted an application with Carlisle City Council to extend the warehouse facility at its Carlisle factory plus make other improvements to the Dalston Road site. Pirelli will add a further 4,060 square metres or so of warehouse space. The extension, which will include four loading bays, will increase the warehouse facility’s total size by approximately a third.
Supporting documentation submitted with the application states that “there has been a change in Pirelli’s tyre production mix over recent years and they (the Carlisle plant) are now producing predominately SUV sized tyres that are significantly larger than traditional tyres; this has meant the existing warehouse storage space has reached full capacity.” At present, tyres that cannot be housed in Pirelli’s existing warehouse facility are stored off-site at the Kingmoor Industrial Estate. The extension is expected to decrease the overall amount of lorry movements from the Pirelli factory and to the Kingmoor Industrial Estate. Staffing levels are not envisaged to increase as a result of the extension.
As previously reported by tyrepress.com, Pirelli is currently committed to investing a total of £20.4 million in Carlisle; £11.4 million is being spent on research and development and £9 million on factory upgrades.
