Matt Neal to choose Dunlop designer of the future
Three times BTCC winner, Matt Neal, is to judge Dunlop’s annual car livery competition. The Europe wide competition aims to find a winning livery for the Dunlop Ferrari that will race in the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours in June.
Motorsport and car fans, design students and artists (aged 16 years and over*) from across Europe are invited to take part. Each country will have a competition with four entries put forward to the European final. Dunlop is proud to announce that Matt Neal will choose the best four UK designs as part of this pan European competition.
The competition is now in its fifth year, and winning designs over the years have varied widely; including designs incorporating the union flag, paint streaks and tread patterns.
The country finalists are then reduced to four international winners, three being selected by the EU jury. The final place will be given to the most popular design. First prize includes seeing the art car unveiled at the pre-race test weekend at Le Mans on 8 June. The winner will also attend an awards dinner, see behind the scenes at the Le Mans test event, receive a pair of tickets to the Le Mans 24 Hours race itself and 1000 Euros. The three runners-up will each receive a canvas print of their design signed by the Ferrari drivers.
Neal comments: “I feel honoured to be asked to judge this competition for Dunlop in the UK. I have a close affinity to Dunlop as I have raced on their products for years and won many races and championships on their products. Although I don’t think of myself as much of a designer, how a car looks on the grid is something that I, as a race driver, take very seriously. It’s like the clothes you walk around in and if it looks the best, you feel the best which can only help your mental state to win a race.
“I’ll be looking for the most confident designs from the entries and will be searching for that special something from all of the designs. As Dunlop also celebrates its 125th anniversary this year I will also be looking to see that featuring on the livery.”
Entries can be submitted via the Facebook page, titled ‘Design the Drive, closing date for entries and voting is 14 May. The four winners from each country will be announced on 16 May with the winner and runners-up being notified on 20 May. The winning design will be seen for the first time on 8th June when it emerges from the pit-garage at Le Mans. The four UK winners will win a set of Dunlop road tyres and a Matt Neal signed Dunlop cap.
