Debut for latest Goodyear wheel loader tyre
Enjoying its world premiere at Bauma 2013 is Goodyear’s new RT-5D wheel loader tyre. The RT-5D is a level 250 (L5) traction tyre intended for use in severe conditions such as quarries, difficult industrial applications and in open or underground mines. Goodyear says the RT-5D offers 25 per cent more load capacity than its predecessor, the RT-5C.
The RT-5D features what Goodyear calls Hi-Stability Carcass Technology. This combines reinforcements in the bead area, on the carcass breakers and at the ply turn-up. The result, claims the tyre maker, is “enhanced productivity performance, greater protection for the sidewalls in aggressive environments and minimised deflection.” The additional 25 per cent load-carrying capacity per cycle means increased productivity and therefore profitability, Goodyear adds.
The tyre’s CAD-developed tread design is said to deliver a high level of protection against impact and shocks and also offer powerful traction and longevity, particularly in tough environments such as quarrying. The wide and solid non-directional tread further enables the transport of heavy loads such as blocks. Compared to the RT-5C, vibrations on hard surfaces are reduced by 30 per cent.
In its size 29.5R25 incarnation, the RT-5D has a maximum load per tyre of 22.4 tonnes at 10 km/h and 6.5 bars inflation pressure. This currently available size – which has already been approved as an original equipment fitment on Volvo L220G and L250G wheel loaders – will be joined by sizes 20.5R25, 23.5R25, 26.5R25 and 875/65R33 in the near future; Goodyear says the line-up will be extended to cover the full range of mid-size wheel loaders.
