Avon begins eighth year with British GT Championship
Avon will begin its eighth successive year as sole tyre supplier to the Avon Tyres British GT Championship at Oulton Park on Easter weekend. Launched on the evening of 7 March in London, the 2013 season features grids boosted by a number of European entries.
Paul Coates, general manager of Avon Tyres Motorsport, said: “The Avon Tyres British GT Championship is arguably in the best shape it has been in for several years. The high standard of racing over the past few seasons, combined with increased exposure for the championship, has made it increasingly attractive for new teams and drivers and it’s fantastic that a national championship is now attracting teams from Europe and further afield.”
With a rich sporting tradition of GT applications strectching back to 1959, when Stirling Moss led the Aston Martin team to the World Sportscar Championship title, Avon continues to prove its position at the forefront of GT tyre production. This year, Avon has further expanded its GT involvement, adding the Swedish GT Series to its portfolio as it continues to consolidate its standing as the dominant force in GT racing.
Last year’s British GT Championship provided the closest ever finish to a British GT race, when Jann Mardenborough and Alex Buncombe clung on to victory by two hundredths of a second from Andrew Howard and Johnny Adam at Brands Hatch. Motorbase duo Michael Caine and Daniele Perfetti, despite not tasting victory all season, emerged victorious at a nail-biting season finale. Meanwhile, GT4 glory was sealed at the penultimate weekend, with Warren Hughes and rising star, Jody Fannin, clinching the title ahead of Zoe Wenham.
Avon’s motorsport interests will continue to stretch into multiple forms of racing and 2013 looks set to be busier than ever. The brand enters its second year as title sponsor to the Avon Tyres MSA British Hillclimb Championship and parent company, Cooper Tires, was recently announced as a principal partner of the FIA European Rallycross Championship for 2013. Avon will provide control tyres to a wide range of championships including all of Caterham’s official racing in the UK.
