Michelin commended at Prince Michael road safety event
Michelin’s contribution to raising awareness of road safety was recognised yesterday at a lunch held in London, to celebrate the company winning the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award. The tyre maker was presented with the award in May for its on-going commitment to road safety. The lunch is held annually to commend award winners and Michelin joins other frontrunners and government ministers at the event, which was hosted by HRH Prince Michael of Kent GCVO.
“Winning this award for road safety is testament to everything the company is doing to promote road safety,” stated Eric Le Corre, managing director of Michelin Tyre PLC. “Michelin has pioneered a number of road safety schemes, both internally and outside of the company. Our overall goal is to make driving safer, providing employees with training and promoting road safety to the general public, particularly young drivers.”
Since 2009, all Michelin company car drivers have taken part in road safety training courses. Similarly, information tools including Road Safety awareness kits are provided to all employees in countries where Michelin has manufacturing operations. In the UK, Michelin is a Driving for Better Business champion; the accident rate of the group’s car fleet has been cut by more than 50 per cent since a comprehensive driving policy was implemented five years ago.
In addition to these internal measures, Michelin has introduced a wide range of road safety programs in the countries in which it operates during the past decade. While each program is adapted to the local communities’ needs, they are all designed to raise awareness about road-related dangers.
“Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards recognise outstanding achievement and innovation,” commented RoadSafe director Adrian Walsh. “Michelin is a true leader in this field through product innovation and through its community schemes. Road safety is embedded into the company’s philosophy, and the award recognises Michelin’s international dedication to reducing risk.”
In May 2011, Michelin was one of the first companies, to sign the Global Road Safety Commitment in support of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 launched by the United Nations. In 2012, Michelin has invested 6 million euros worldwide to support global road safety initiatives.
