Fuel campaigners lobby MPs

On 21st November, as part of the on-going build-up of political pressure in advance of the Autumn Statement, the Road Haulage Association joined fuel campaigners at the Palace of Westminster to tell MPs, face to face, about the hardship being forced upon their constituents as a result of high fuel prices.

"Each of the supporting groups gave a short presentation to the MPs present", said RHA Chief Executive Geoff Dunning. "We were able to provide them with a stark list of facts and figures that really pushed the message home. The good news is that those present certainly appeared to be genuinely concerned".

It was also encouraging was that each and every Member of Parliament in attendance, regardless of political party, was keen to give advice on the best way forward regarding lobbying.

“Get your members to write to their MP and tell them to get their employees to write too. Letters that all say the same thing do not have the same impact as those giving details of particular hardship” was the message. And with only two weeks to go until the Autumn Statement, now is the time to get the letters written and into the hands of MPs

One of the presenters highlighted an instance whereby one of their members had to give up work because he could no longer afford to fuel his car.

“We have to see this issue tackled as a matter of extreme urgency”, concluded Geoff Dunning.  “Let’s see a cut in fuel duty and free up the money in people’s pockets. At a time when so many are suffering financially, this is a sure fire way of getting the wheels of the economy moving.
