Nexen Changnyeong plant officially opened
Nexen’s Changnyeong factory, the tyre manufacturer's latest passenger car tyre production plant, officially opened on Tuesday 11 October. The factory has already been producing tyres since earlier in the year (as Tyres & Accessories reported in our July issue of the magazine, Company News, page 38). However, the latest event marks the symbolic start of serial production.
According to company representatives, there is also a local connection to recent TAFF Award winning wholesaler BITS. With tyres such as the Roadstone-branded N Blue HD1 having already been manufactured and shipped to the UK ready for distribution across the country through the Bristol-based business.
The official opening also provided the platform for Nexen Tire chairman, Byung-Jung Kang, to announce the completion of the first phase of Nexen’s industrial complex on the 610,000 m² ground in Changnyeong after two years of construction work since its groundbreaking.
Nexen reports that after the opening ceremony, the investment will continue and 1.2 trillion Korean won in total will be invested by 2018. By the time all the investment in Changnyeong plant is complete in 2018, combined with the other two plants in Yangsan and Qingdao, Nexen’s annual production will be around 60 million units, which is twice the volume now.
Changnyeong’s automated lines enable four team three shift system with only 900 employees. “When we complete the investment in our second plant in Korea, we will become one of the top 10 tyre manufacturers in the world…” chairman Kang emphasized.
