Upturn in July motorcycle sales
The latest new motorcycle and scooter figures show last month sales overall were up 4.5 per cent against July 2011. Under 50cc scooter sales were down 0.9 per cent in July, while all larger bikes over 50cc motorcycle sales have increased by 5.5 per cent.
Sue Robinson, Director of the RMI National Franchised Dealers Association which represents motorcycle and franchised car retailers across the UK commented “It is extremely encouraging to see motorcycle sales up in July after a disappointing couple of months for motorcycle sales.
“Bike sales spanned a range of power bands and model types indicating an increase in bike sales across the board.
“125cc scooters continued to improve in sales, up 11.2 per cent in comparison to July last year with the Honda PCX125 model recording the most sales in that sector. This type of bike is a more efficient and cost effective mode of transport for the discerning consumer so therefore continues to be used as a mode of commuter transport.
“Larger motorcycles also received a boost to registrations with the adventure-sport, super-sport, trail/endure and unspecified sectors all recording an increase in sales.
“These larger bikes usually receive a boost in sales prior to July as consumers look to upgrade to purchase a bike prior to the dry and sunny summer period. However this year it appears that more working professionals that commute into the cities are choosing to this type of motorcycle as a way of cutting down on travelling time and costs.”
