Premier League fleet provider applauds Michelin mileage

Merseyside’s Ellisons Travel specialises on providing chauffeured travel to some of the top names in professional sport, supplying Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea as well as the England Rugby Union team. Following a recent test, the company says that it will switch its luxury car fleet to Michelin tyres, having experienced improved performance and up to 30 per cent extra mileage. Ellisons’ fleet of 42 Mercedes S and E class cars will be put onto the policy first, with the company’s policy on a further three Mercedes Sprinters and 23 luxury coaches under review.

Kumho issues Solus recall notice in the US

Kumho Tire U.S.A., Inc. has recalled a number of its Solus passenger car tyres due to a sidewall cracking issue. According to the company’s submission to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administrion (NHTSA), certain 225/45 R17 Kumho Solus KH25 produced 21 August 2011 through 23 June 2012 have an issue which could develop into cracking in the sidewall, which could result in air loss and in turn in a potential tyre failure.

Bridgestone OP beats analysts expectations

With Bridgestone having announced that first half operating profits grew 43 per cent year-on-year to 133.8 billion yen, the tyre manufacturer has upped its full-year operating profit guidance. Bridgestone had predicted that it would achieve 118 billion yen by this measure, with Deutsche Bank estimating nearer 136 billion yen. As a result the financial analysts now report that the company has lifted its full-year operating profit projections and is now looking at 50 per cent year-on-year growth to 287 billion yen (previous predictions were 269 billion yen, with Deutsche Bank expecting 316 billion yen).

Brazil studying proposals for new tyre regulation

Brazil’s government has carried out a public consultation to determine regulations for tyres sold in the country in preparation for legislations towards greener tyres. Chemicals manufacturer Lanxess reports that the consultation was performed last month and the government is now analysing the suggestions it received; these will be published before the end of the year.

Pirelli confirms continuation of 16.5-inch production

In response to marketplace concerns, Pirelli Tire North America has reassured its customers that the tyre maker doesn’t intend to cease production of 16.5-inch slick and rain motorcycle tyres. In a statement, the company’s Moto Road Racing manager Jeff Johnston said “Pirelli is committed to servicing the North America market now and in the future with 16.5-inch racing tyres. Our road racing distributors stock these slick and rain tyres in the latest constructions and compounds…as a worldwide leader in motorcycle road racing tyres sales and service, we maintain one of the broadest selections of performance products for both amateur and professional racing enthusiasts.”

Terms agreed for Titan Europe share offer

News of Titan International’s moves to acquire Titan Europe PLC has been public for about a month now, but to fulfil Rule 2.7 of the Takeover Code, the company announced on 10 August its formal acquisition offer. In a statement, Titan International reports that agreement has been reached between the board of Titan International and the independent directors of Titan Europe on the terms of a recommended share offer for Titan Europe’s entire issued and to be issued share capital.

Conti to preview bumper truck/bus range at IAA

Continental says it plans to premiere its next generation of truck tyres at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show 2012, which takes place in Hannover, Germany from 20 to 27 September. According to the German tyre maker’s account, there should be plenty to see – Continental says it will launch the “most comprehensive range of truck and bus tyres in the history of the company” during 2013. Nikolai Setzer, head of Continental’s Tyres division, Dr. Andreas Esser, head of the Commercial Vehicle Tyres business unit and Herbert Mensching, head of Marketing and Sales Truck Tyres EMEA, will discuss this and other current plans and developments at a press conference on 18 September.

Latest Toyo figures show tyre business growth

Toyo Tire & Rubber has reported net sales of 120,474 million yen (£980.8 million) for the first quarter of its current financial year, the three months to 30 June 2012. The company’s tyre business unit accounted for 96,448 million yen (£785.2 million) of these sales, 80.1 per cent of the total. Company operating income amounted to 3,529 million yen (£28.7 million), while tyre business operating income was 2,428 million yen (£19.8 million). Total net income came to 1,252 million yen (£10.2 million).

1,000th Vianor outlet to open before year’s end

At the end of the second quarter, Nokian Tyres could count a total of 961 fast fit outlets operating under the Vianor banner. While the tyre maker directly owns 180 of these, a further 781 operate under franchise and other partnership agreements. In the first half of 2012 the network grew by a further 51 outlets, and upon releasing its financial data to 30 June Nokian stated that it sees reaching the 1,000 outlet milestone a realistic goal for this year.

Sumitomo-Stamford JV a potential prelude to further collaboration

Stamford Tyres Corporation and Sumitomo Rubber Industries have commented further on their plans to set up a joint venture sales company in India. Yasutaka Ii, director and senior executive officer of Sumitomo Rubber, said “India is a market with huge potential. We are delighted to continue our partnership with Stamford Tyres which has a strong distribution track record, as part of our group’s expansion into new markets. This new joint venture will allow the two companies to leverage on their expertise to address the needs in the Indian market and tap onto this market’s huge potential.”

Federal Tires says it is honoured to have been given a 2012 Taiwan Excellence Award at a presentation held by the country’s Ministry of Economic Affairs last month. The tyre maker says the accolade recognises its “success in building a strong reputation as a reliable tyre supplier of high quality products.”

Jail cheating drivers, says RHA

The Road Haulage Association has called for tougher action to be taken against truck drivers who falsify their driving records. Mandatory jail sentences are needed to deter those who are tempted to cheat – backed by a new determination to detect and prosecute them through the courts, the RHA says.

Lanxess – continued growth in Q2

Specialty chemicals Group Lanxess reports continued growth in the second quarter of 2012, with EBITDA pre-exceptionals rising 6.8 per cent year-on-year to 362 million euros. Sales increased 8.1 per cent to 2.42 billion euros. Commenting on the results, company CEO Axel C. Heitmann said “we believe these results confirm our view of the seasonal development, and we are therefore adhering to our target of raising EBITDA pre exceptionals by five to ten per cent for the full year. Our focus on megatrends and growth regions, combined with our technological expertise, provide stability in an increasingly challenging environment.”

Haulier confident ATS Euromaster tyre policy will reduce costs

East Yorkshire-based haulier HB Holt & Sons has appointed ATS Euromaster tyre and tyre service provider for its fleet of 50 trucks and 74 trailers. The agreement will see Michelin group-manufactured Taurus tyres fitted, as wear dictates, backed up by 24/7 access to emergency roadside assistance.
