ASBK riders to have 3 tyre brand choices in 2013
Riders competing in the 2013 Australian Superbike Championships will have the choice of racing on Pirelli, Michelin or Dunlop tyres as series organiser, International Entertainment Group (IEG), has decided to end the practice of using a control tyre for all but one competition class. IEG will also place a cap on the number of tyres that can be used and the price of tyres, a measure it says will ensure costs are kept to a minimum for all participants.
Dunlop previously served as series control tyre. “The move was made to allow riders a wider choice and will bring the cost of racing down, as well as add another exciting element to the tactics and strategy of racing,” explained IEG managing director Yarrive Konsky. “IEG thanks Pirelli and Michelin for their interest in being involved once more and Dunlop for their continued support.”
Superbike and Prostock clas riders will be restricted to less than AU$580 (£384) per set and up two three front and four rear / two compounds may be homologated per brand. Supersport & Superstock class riders must keep tyre purchases under $480 per set and three front and three rear / two compounds may be homologated per brand. For the Superlites class, the budget is $350 per set, with two front & two rear / two compounds will be homologated per brand. In the 250 Production class a Pirelli control tyre will be used and one front and one rear / two compounds may be homologated.
