Michelin is continuing to recall up to 73,645 truck tyres in North America. This is a continuation of a recall that was first announced 30 April 2012. While any of the tyres made on the affected production runs could potentially display the defect only 0.25 per cent has done so at this point.
According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Michelin North America, Inc. (Michelin) is recalling certain 305/85 R22.5 Michelin XZU3, 12 R22.5 Michelin XZU2 tyres produced between 23 October 2005 and 3 September 2011. At the same time the company is also recalling some Michelin XM505 (size 305/85 R22.5 tyres produced between 18 April and 8 May 2010, and 23 January and 12 February 2011.
The details of the NHTSA recall notice suggest that these tyres have a casing that “may experience a loss of integrity and, in some cases, have rapid air loss.” The warning is that if rapid air loss of the tyre were to occur while the vehicle is in motion this could result in a vehicle crash.
