Durability, response and grip from Maxxis’ high performers
When it comes to performance, Maxxis says you can rely on its tyres to deliver enhanced grip, improved tread wear, responsive handling and more miles per gallon. The current Maxxis performance range includes the top-selling MAZ1, the all-season MAZ4S and the new PRO R1.
PRO R1
Available in sizes from 195/60R15 to 245/45ZR19, the PRO R1 is a new UHP tyre developed to combine enhanced wet and dry weather performance with more miles per gallon and a quiet ride. Harnessing nano dispersement technology has enabled Maxxis to combine silica rich compounds with finely ground, consistently sized carbon black particles to produce better distribution and bonding with its specially developed ‘Ultra R’ rubber. The result is a reinforced silica tread compound that Maxxis says delivers better grip and improved fuel economy. This compound, together with the tyre’s tread pattern design – which channels water away from the contact area via four central grooves – is said to deliver superior grip in wet conditions and, with the addition of other chemicals, improve rolling resistance and fuel consumption.
The multi-pitch block design with raised centre section is designed not only to reduce pattern vibration and frequency, resulting in low noise, but also enhance handling, while performance is further boosted by a jointless spiral-wound bead wire, which provides added strength and reliability, and a slimline bead filler, which ensures a controlled ride. The fruit of this is shown in test results, Maxxis notes: In dry and wet asphalt braking tests where it was pitched against a premium European brand, the PRO R1 outscored this control tyre by 9.8 per cent and 4.2 per cent respectively.
MAZ1
One of the most popular products in the Maxxis range, the UHP all-season MAZ1, is available in a wide range of sizes up to 285/30ZR20 and features a high bead filler and stiff shoulder blocks for better cornering and handling stability. The tyre’s unidirectional tread design is described as aggressive and the MAZ1 also features a high rim protector. The tyre is manufactured from a silica compound that is not only intended to ensure superior traction in wet and dry conditions, but also deliver improved rolling resistance for better fuel economy. Double-steel belts and a jointless spiral-wrapped full nylon cap are there for extra durability, while the solid central rib enhances overall manoeuvrability.
MAZ4S
This all-season UHP radial features a low aspect ratio, unidirectional V-shaped tread design and specially formulated silica rich tread compound; Maxxis comments that the MAZ4S is renowned for grip, fuel economy and improved handling in all conditions. A solid centre rib plus reinforced casing and robust body ply structure aid handling and stability, while a hard bead filler compound improves cornering. Four high-void, circumferential main grooves expel water for better wet grip and multiple grooves combine with the optimal siping design for improved traction in snow. The five-pitch tread blocks and 2-in-1 groove design also minimise noise to ensure a quiet, comfortable ride. The MAZ4S is available in sizes from 185/55R16 to 285/35R22.
Innovative competition tyres
Maxxis has expanded its range of tyres developed for competition racing with the introduction of the new RC1, which is purpose-designed for dry road racing applications. The specially formulated racing compound is said to deliver outstanding dry traction while retaining excellent heat cycle and durability, and the tyre more than holds its own in sudden wet weather thanks to its dual wide circumferential grooves.
The RC-1 takes to the grid alongside the street legal MAZ1 Drift, a competition version of the top-selling MAZ1. Manufactured from a high temperature silicone rubber compound for longer life and superior grip, the MAZ1 Drift has helped teams to victory in the leading UK, European and American drift series. It also maintains its position as the tyre of choice with Team Japspeed, winners of the constructor’s title in the 2011 Maxxis British Drift Championship, and the SATS Motorsport team.
Purpose developed for asphalt track racing, the ZR9 features a well-balanced tread, sidewall and bead design plus an advanced racing compound with special rubber and carbon black to meet the handling and traction requirements for racing.
