South Africa waste tyre management plan “back on track”
A plan by government-backed REDISA (Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa) to help deal with the growing problem of waste tyres in the country is “back on track”, according to local news sources. The government announced that the Integrated Industry Waste Tyre Management Plan (IIWTMP) had been signed by Minister Edna Molewa, and will deal with close to 200,000 tons of waste tyres produced in South Africa per year. The country currently recycles an estimated five per cent of tyres.
Currently waste tyres are mostly stored illegally in large sites around the country. A statement from the Department of Water and Environmental Affairs said the plan: “will curb the known impacts of waste tyre stockpiles, such as human health risks associated with mosquito and vermin breeding as well as air pollution impacts from burning of tyres and fire hazards posed by such waste tyre stockpiles.”
The plan aims to establish an improved recycling sector through research and development.
