Motorcycle sales rise in February
The latest new motorcycle and scooter figures show sales overall were up 1.4 per cent against February 2011. Under 50cc scooter sales were down 15.8 per cent in February, while over 50cc motorcycle sales have increased six per cent.
Sue Robinson, director of the RMI National Franchised Dealers Association which represents motorcycle and franchised car retailers across the UK commented “It is encouraging to see that motorcycle sales figures increased last month.
“The majority of the growth came from the 125cc and over 1000cc engine bikes, up 9.7 per cent and 16.1 per cent respectively.
“The 125cc market has continued to grow as consumers seek out a more cost effective mode of commuter transport. There is a trend in urban and city areas for consumers to purchase smaller bikes.
“Many of the specialist large bikes (over 1000cc) tend to be purchased by older professionals who may be less affected by the current economic crisis. This may explain why sales for this size bike are up when others are still suffering from poor sales.”
