Decline in van sales drags down CV market
"February 2012 sales figures saw a dip in the overall commercial vehicle market after a period of strong recovery in 2011. While truck registrations continued to rise, up 26.4 per cent in February, van registrations fell by 26.4 per cent" said Sue Robinson, Director of the RMI National Franchised Dealers Association which represents commercial vehicle and franchised car retailers across the UK, commenting on the SMMT's van and truck registration figures.
Robinson continued: “During 2012 small to mid-sized van sales have declined significantly, by 34.3 per cent year to date. This type of van is typically purchased by small businesses or self employed individuals within the services industry. This industry is at present suffering from depleted business levels due to the current economic climate which will be affecting their ability to commit to purchasing such big ticket items.
“Many of these businesses are hoping that the Budget on 21 March will address new initiatives that will stimulate consumer and business confidence. “However the truck market has continued to grow during 2012, up 36.7 per cent year to date. This is the 17th consecutive rise in the truck market.”
The latest combined sales figures for van and truck show month on month sales were down 18.1 per cent compared to February 2011 and up 12.1 per cent on the rolling year. Truck registrations were up 26.4 per cent in comparison to February last year while van registrations were down 26.4 per cent on February last year.
