Fiege extends Bridgestone European Logistics
German company the Fiege Group, who handles logistics for Bridgestone in several European countries, reports it has begun supplying the Swiss market via cross-border distribution from its facility in Lahr, in southwest Germany. The assumption of Swiss distribution logistics has transformed the Fiege facility in Lahr from a national distribution warehouse into an internationally-operating distribution centre, the company adds. In co-operation with Bridgestone and the respective national customs authorities, Fiege says it has come up with a distribution solution than enables the daily supply of tyres within a standard transit time of 24 hours, as well as the organisation of the entire customs clearance for the transport of the goods from Germany to Switzerland.
“We deem the current expansion of our co-operation as proof of the professionalism of our work and appreciate the major trust which one of the world’s leading manufacturers of tyres has been placing in us for over 30 years now,” stated Jens Fiege, director of the Fiege Stiftung & Co. KG board. “This pan-national pilot project will also be of interest to other customers from the tyre industry, since borders separating countries are increasingly blurred and cross-border distribution as well as the consolidation of stock beyond borders are becoming increasingly vital.”
Transport between the Lahr facility and Switzerland is operated mainly using vehicles from Fiege Logistik (Schweiz) AG’s own fleet. Large consignments are delivered directly from the Lahr logistics centre to customers in Switzerland, and mini-shipments are distributed via the LCL network of Fiege Logistik (Schweiz) AG. Bridgestone’s entire Swiss market consumer and commercial product range is now stocked in Lahr. By re-organising its logistics, Bridgestone was able to consolidate stock that was previously kept at two warehouses while simultaneously increasing the availability of articles for Swiss customers.
