Cooper Findlay deal rejected
Despite news to the contrary, Tire Review shares that union workers at Cooper Tire & Rubber’s hometown Findlay, Ohio, plant still do not have a new contract with the tyre maker.
Reports floated over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend that a three-year deal was struck, but later statements by USW Local 207 made it clear that the workers rejected Cooper’s latest offer. Union workers held a ratification vote on the company’s offer on November 27, turning it down 606 votes against to 305 in favor.
On November 23, an Ohio-based television station reported that a tentative deal had been reached, with a Cooper official stating “we are very happy to have forged an agreement with the union that keeps Cooper tyres being produced in Findlay, Ohio. Both parties worked very hard to come to a deal that helps the plant compete in an ultra-competitive and increasingly volatile global market. This is an important move for our employees, our business, and the Findlay community.”
Unconfirmed reports on November 28 indicate that the plant has been closed at least for the day, but no formal strike or lockout actions have been called.
