Nürburgring EV record broken on Nokian tyres
A new lap record has been set at the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit – and Nokian Tyres is proud of the role its products played. The Electric RaceAbout (E-RA) vehicle, built by the Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and fitted with Nokian Z G2 tyres, zipped around the Nordschleife in 8:42.72, setting a lap record for road legal electric cars. The E-RA averaged more than 142 km/h during its run and cut more than a minute from the previous record.
The top speed reached was 238 km/h. Speaking about his record lap in the E-RA vehicle, which is powered by four inboard mount motors, driver Ralf Kelleners commented “I have to trust the tyres, feel and understand them. Nokian tyres are ideal for it.”
During its Nürburgring run the E-RA was fitted with the Nokian Z G2 in size 225/40 ZR 18 on the front axle and 245/40 ZR 18 at the rear. Commenting on the tyres used, Nokian Tyres development manager Juha Pirhonen said “they quickly respond to steering movements but also have a low rolling resistance, which is especially important for electric cars. Their accurate handling is due to the Nokian Cool Zone concept’s innovations, the multi-layer surface structure, nanosilica compound and surface geometry. The multi-layer surface structure lowers the tyre’s rolling resistance and reduces heat emission. A flexible nanosilica compound used in the intermediate layer quickly responds to steering movements. The strong structure and three longitudinal centre ribs guarantee excellent handling properties.”
