Ireland gears up for tyre safety week
Our own tyre safety month is currently underway, and across the Irish Sea a similar focus is also being made on tyre safety during October. On Monday 10 October Irish Road Safety Week gets underway, and like its UK counterpart the campaign will include a range of initiatives aimed at road users, including free tyre checks.
“Irish road-users have shown that if everyone makes a concerted effort, it will save lives,” commented Ireland’s minister
for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar TD. “We have seen further reductions in the number of lives lost on our roads this year. I would urge everyone to get involved in the activities going on in their counties during ‘Irish Road Safety Week’, and to continue saving lives.”
According to Ireland’s Road Safety Authority, of the 560,000 vehicles tested during the NCT, the country’s MoT equivalent, in the first six months of this year, more than 106,076 problems relating to tyres were found. The reasons for tyres failing the NCT ranged from tread depth below the 1.6mm minimum to the presence of cuts or a break in the tyre fabric. The RSA and the Irish Tyre Industry Association (ITIA) are warning road-users that sub-standard or incorrect tyres could have serious road safety consequences and urge motorists to receive a free tyre check at participating centres on ‘National Tyre Safety Day’, Tuesday 11 October.
“We all know it’s a good idea to check our tyres regularly, but the truth is the average Irish motorist doesn’t always give tyres the attention they deserve,” reflected ITIA president Brian O’Neill. “Overlooking your tyres is a mistake. When it comes to the roadworthiness of your car, and the safety of the people travelling in it, few things are more critical than a good set of properly selected, professionally fitted, correctly inflated tyres.”
