Winter tyres – the thaw continues
Many whose thoughts didn’t turn to winter tyres a year ago were swayed by the second helping of chilly weather served to us in 2010-11. When the Met Office told us that the month of December was the coldest experienced since nationwide temperatures were recorded in 1910, the news came as no surprise to most people. How did the UK motorist respond to this new ‘ice age’? Largely by ignoring it, but a much greater minority than ever before chose to equip their vehicle for the conditions.
Many tyre wholesalers and retailers were thus caught out by an unprecedented demand for winter tyres in 2010-11 and stocks at garages and fast fit outlets rapidly dwindled. Following this experience, some of the larger players voiced their intention to get serious about cold weather tyres in 2011-12, and therefore the upcoming season is shaping up to be the most promising ever for the UK winter tyre market.
