Report: Pirelli considering Carlisle investment
Italian tyre giant Pirelli could be considering an investment in the future of its Carlisle plant according to a report by regional newspaper The Cumberland News. The paper reports a conversation with Pirelli’s UK Industrial director Paolo Battistini, who suggested that the company has some “investment forecast for this factory.” Battistini also reiterated the company’s desire to stay in Carlisle, while engineering manager Allan Wilson told the paper that “We want to develop new products in Carlisle for the UK. We’re constantly putting forward our case for investment.”
Battistini continued: “We have to see the trends of the market to understand if we can increase or try to maintain profitability for this factory in order to survive. Due to the fact we had the crisis in 2009, we are recovering and trying to anticipate problems rather than be reactive.”
The paper concluded that extra investment in the current factory would amount to updating the machinery used at the plant, and that expansion was at this stage unlikely. Pirelli has yet to reveal details of how much money is likely to be spent on the facility, or in what form the investment will arrive. Bosses at the factory suggest the plant’s future could be in the manufacture of higher value products, though the Northumberland News report says investment would be needed to take the plant in this direction.
