Luxembourg introduces ‘winter tyres for winter conditions’ law
On July 29 the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg introduced a regulation making the use of winter tyres compulsory in certain weather conditions. As of October 1, 2012, cars will be required to have M+S marked tyres fitted when frost, ice, slush or packed snow is present; trucks, buses and other heavy vehicles will be required to have M+S tyres fitted to drive axles.
The Luxembourg government stresses that the new legislation is not a blanket requirement for winter tyre fitment and it will remain legal to drive vehicles not fitted with M+S tyres in winter should the weather conditions be appropriate. The rule applies to both Luxembourg and foreign-registered vehicles. Motorcycles and mopeds are not covered by the new legislation as their winter use is considered to be limited.
