Kumho ordered to relocate Nanjing plant
Kumho Tire has received notification from the Nanjing Environmental Protection Bureau that it must relocate its Gaoxin plant, situated within the city, to a new site. The tyre maker is one of 173 companies to have received relocation instructions. Since the facility was first built in 1994 the surrounding land has become increasingly built up and in July 2011 the bureau identified the plant as a major source of pollution.
Although reports on Kumho’s exact relocation timetable vary, it appears the company will move the plant to another site some time next year. A Nanjing Environmental Protection Bureau representative said Kumho Tires management have spoken with the authorities in Nanjing regarding planning and site selection; the representative said the tyre maker will set up a new plant within the Jiangbei Chemical Industry Park, located outside of the city.
