Sumitomo: 50 million tyres in China – and counting
Sumitomo Rubber Industries reports that on June 15 its subsidiary in China, Sumitomo Rubber (Changshu) Co., Ltd., manufactured its 50 millionth tyre. This milestone was reached after less than a decade of operation; the company was established nine years ago to meet the growing needs of the Chinese market, and production of radial tyres began in April 2004.
At a ceremony to commemorate the 50 millionth tyre’s production, Sumitomo Rubber (Changshu) president Masafumi Takami stated “we will contribute to the growth of the Chinese economy by supplying tyres and services to satisfy our customers.” Currently the company produces 6,000 tyres per day at its 320,000 square metre site in Changshu, northwest of Shanghai. Sumitomo Rubber’s supply to this particular market will increase in the coming 12 months when its second production facility in China, Sumitomo Rubber (Hunan) Co. Ltd., enters operation. Production there is scheduled to commence in July 2012.
