North American casing shortage ‘severe’, says RTA
According to the Retread Tire Association, North America’s retreading industry is experiencing a severe shortage of retreadable truck tyre casings. Association managing director Harvey Brodsky comments that this shortage may have a negative impact on those who use retreads as retreaded tyres act as a “brake” on new tyre prices: “Whenever there is a shortage of retreads, new tyre manufacturers do not have any reason to hold back on raising their prices, and everyone who purchases truck tyres feels the pain in their chequebooks.”
Brodsky thus implores anyone who has retreadable casings in their possession to either have them retreaded or sell them – he notes that the selling price for casings is currently higher than ever. “Retreaders are hungry for retreadable casings and are willing to pay a premium for popular sizes of truck tyres,” he says. Anyone wishing to sell their unwanted casings can find out the names of retreaders in their area and also gain information on the North American casing market from the Retread Tire Association.
“If you already use retreads, you know how much money you are saving and how good the quality is these days. If you haven’t used retreads before or it has been years since you did, you need to know that today’s retreads produced by top quality retreaders are better than ever and enjoy an adjustment rate as low as the best new tires, and often even lower,” Brodsky adds.
