Happy 65th, Tyres & Accessories
This month, many of those born in June 1946 are gearing up to receive their gold watch and embark on retired life. Not so Tyres & Accessories. Sixty-five years after its birth as a “new journal for a new age,” the UK’s magazine for the tyre and wheel industries continues going from strength to strength and takes pleasure in bringing the latest news and information to an ever-evolving industry.
The launch of Tyres & Accessories in June 1946 was timely; on June 1, almost seven years after the Second World War began, central control of passenger car tyre distribution by the Board of Trade’s Authorised Tyre Dealers came to an end and Britain’s post-war tyre trade got under way. Issues relevant to this brave new world were tackled in our first issue; topics covered included “Farewell Control! Now, What About the Future?” and “Have Retreads Come to Stay?” We also reported that the heavily bombed Continental tyre factory in Hannover, Germany was now once again in operation and producing in excess of 1,000 passenger car tyres per day.
Under the control of founder Fred W.P. Carter the fledgling publication soon gained acceptance within the British tyre trade, and increasing numbers of industry professionals paid a shilling each month for their copy of Tyres & Accessories – a magazine that in those days contained around fifty pages and was a strictly black and white affair. Now, 65 years later, Carter and the original editorial contributors are long gone, yet Tyres & Accessories’ goal of meeting today’s industry developments remains unchanged. The team at Tyres & Accessories look forward to continuing as your magazine for the tyre and wheel industries as we move ahead and meet the challenges of today’s industry and market.
