Groundbreaking held for Asahi Kasei S-SBR plant
Japan’s Asahi Kasei Chemicals has held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new synthetic rubber plant on Singapore’s Jurong Island. The June 22 event marks the start of work on a facility expected to produce 50,000 tons of solution-polymerised styrene-butadiene rubber (S-SBR) a year when the first stage work is complete in May 2013. Second stage work at the site, scheduled for completion in early 2015, should double annual output.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by around 100 guests, including Asahi Kasei president Taketsugu Fujiwara, Singapore Economic Development Board chairman Leo Yip Seng Cheong and Japan’s ambassador to Singapore, Yoichi Suzuki. Asahi Kasei says that the new plant in Singapore represents “a major step in diversifying its operation base for enhanced stability of supply to meet growing demand and customer needs.” Currently the company has the capacity to produce 140,000 tons of S-SBR and butadiene rubber per annum.
