Maxxis British Drift Championship to begin at Donington
This Easter weekend (22-23 April) sees the 2011 Maxxis British Drift Championship get underway at Donington Park, with new regulations in place designed to make racing more competitive. Teams competing this year on Maxxis’ MA-Z1 Drift tyre will include Paul Cheshire’s 650bhp G35 Skyline and the tyre brand’s own sponsored SATS Cosworth Supra, driven by Mark Luney.
Round one will see a slightly different format to previous years. Maxxis says increased support for and interest have led to the inclusion of three driver classes this season – ‘Semi-Pro’, ‘Pro’ and ‘Super-Pro’ – which means 60 drivers will be competing for the spoils.
“The new format is a really exciting development because it means that not only will the drift battles deliver a tremendous spectacle for drift fans, but those smaller and privateer teams, in which driver skill can make such a difference, now stand a much better chance of winning,” says Derek McMartin, managing director of title sponsor Maxxis International UK.
Good Friday will see first practice continue until 13:00, followed by single run qualifying. There will be an open practice on Saturday until 13:00 before the finals get underway at 14:00. Donington’s Launch Pad is a fast course, ideal for twin car battles, so the organisers of the Maxxis British Drift Championship have ensured maximum seat time for all drivers. The large open space at this venue boasts excellent viewing opportunities for spectators and Maxxis will have a stand out presence at the top of the pit lane, while the Maxxis Babes will also be out in force promoting the brand.
