Massey Wilcox Transport signs Michelin tyre deal
National and international haulier Massey Wilcox Transport has signed a deal to fit Michelin tyres across its entire fleet. Michelin’s price per kilometre (PPK) contract, with tyres serviced by ATS Euromaster, has been adopted by the haulier. Massey Wilcox Transport’s managing director, Robert Wilcox, says: “The quality of Michelin’s tyres will improve fleet performance and give us cost savings on fuel and tyres. We are confident that this is the start of a long relationship with Michelin.”
The 170-strong fleet, which consists largely of Mercedes-Benz tractor units and trailers as well as some rigids, will run on Michelin’s E-segment tyres designed for regional and national operations. In line with Michelin’s Four Lives policy, worn Michelin tyres will be regrooved when the remaining tread depth is between three and four millimetres. Once the regrooved tyres reach the end of this second life they will be returned to Michelin for Remix, the manufacturer’s unique remoulding process. The fourth life is the regroove of the Remix.
The truck fleet will be fitted with Michelin XZE 2+ steer axle tyres and XDE 2+ drive axle tyres, each constructed with a special rubber compound that reduces tread wear. These drive axle tyres also feature a directional tread pattern to reduce uneven wear, with sipes built into the tread to improve grip on most road surfaces.
All trailers will be fitted with XTE 3 trailer tyres, which use the same rubber compound, as well as an additional reinforced crown and buttressed shoulders to provide extra protection against damage. The XTE 3 range has the highest casing acceptance rate for remoulding on the market, according to the manufacturer.
Massey Wilcox Transport operates from three depots in Avonmouth, Chilcompton and Emborough, and delivers cargo including paper, bottled products and packaging throughout the UK, northern France, the Netherlands and Belgium. Each vehicle on the company’s fleet covers between 120,000 km and 250,000 km every year.
