Japanese tyre makers respond to earthquake disaster
The Bridgestone Group has responded to the widespread earthquake and tsunami damage in Japan with a pledge to contribute donations of 300 million yen (approximately US$3.5 million) to assist with relief efforts. Bridgestone Corporation will donate 200 million yen and Bridgestone Group will donate bicycles and bedclothes worth 100 million yen.
The tyre maker also reports no critical damageor injuries at its Tochigi, Nasu, Kuroiso, Tokyo and Yokohama factories, all of which are located in the affected area. Toyo Tire & Rubber states its facilities in Sendai and other locations in Japan have not been affected by the tsunami or experienced significant earthquake damage. Sumitomo Rubber Industries reported on March 12 that its Shirakawa factory in Fukushima prefecture had stopped production due to a power failure, and while no injuries are reported the facility is being inspected for damage.
