Chennai tyre shop looks to the future with TAC-Scan technology
Remember the TAC-Scan technology RL Automotive and Tire Profiles Inc launched at SEMA 2008? (see related links below) T&A mentioned at the time that a machine capable of predicting tyre wear sounds like science fiction. But what was first put to use in top-flight motorsport applications such as Formula One, has now landed in tyre retail in India it may surprise you to learn that some of the most discerning technicians in the tyre business are already using prototypes based on exactly the same technology.
According to online news sources Siremull Hirachand’s tyrestore, on Greams Road, Chennai offers tyre tread depth measuring and tyre health service using TAC-Scan’s machine. As a result, the store claims it can recommend the correct time to change the tyre based on a computerised report on each tyre’s wear characteristics. TAC-Scan is also said to be able to detect tread problems before the human eye can see them.
TAC-Scan, which has now been used in motor racing for over five years, uses a special laser/software combination called the Tread Analysis Condition Scanner. Through this special laser/software combination developed from expertise gained in Formula 1 racing, scientifically derived data is used for diagnostics of car tyres.
This laser/software package makes non-contact measurement of tyre tread and wear both accurate and reportable. The head scans a tyre tread in 3 to 5 seconds delivering accuracy of 1/64″ (0.4mm) and a resolution of 0.004” (0.01mm). TAC-Scan is a stand-alone system, with a compatible computer interface via internal blue tooth or a USB memory stick.
Siremull Hirachand’s Chennai Tyrestore claims to be the only tyre dealer in India using TAC-Scan.
