Maxxis to Sponsor Team Japspeed
In addition to its role as title sponsor of the Maxxis British Drift Championship, tyre manufacturer Maxxis International has announced its sponsorship of Team Japspeed. The deal will continue a successful relationship that began in 2009, in which driver Steve Biagioni won the British Drift Championship using the Maxxis MA-Z1 Drift tyre.
The team says the new Japspeed 1JZ, a RWD converted Subaru Impreza officially unveiled to the general public on the Maxxis stand at the AutoSport International show, is its “most daring drift car to date”. Having stripped the car to a bare shell Japspeed fitted a 2.5-litre Cosworth flat-four engine, producing around 400bhp. While the car was the only competitive Impreza drift car in Europe, many custom parts were needed due to the RWD configuration and 2010 proved to be a major development year for Team Japspeed.
At the end of last season owner Paul McCallum and the team set about transforming the Impreza once again and for 2011 Steve Biagioni’s car will have a Toyota Soarer 1JZ 2.5 litre six cylinder turbocharged engine, which Japspeed says is the first of its kind. The team aims to extract 500bhp from the new engine as it bids to turn the car into one of the fastest competing in the Maxxis British Drift Championship. It will be fitted with Maxxis MA-Z1 Drift tyres.
