Maxxis sponsors 2011 SATS Cosworth Euro Drifting Team
Maxxis has announced that it will take its MA-Z1 Drift tyre onto the European drifting circuit, with the sponsorship of reigning European Drift champion Mark Luney in the SATS Cosworth team. The SATS Cosworth Supra combines the drifting expertise of the SATS Motorsport team with an engine capable of pushing over 800bhp provided by Cosworth. Mark Luney, who has won the championship two years in a row and was also a contender for the title of Maxxis British Drift Champion in 2010, has signed to drive the car over the course of the year at major championships both in the UK and across Europe.
Although the car has actually been part of the drifting scene for the past few years, it was in development for most of 2009 before returning in 2010. While satisfied with the Supra’s performance, SATS Motorsport realised they needed to get more out of it to turn it into a championship winner. Cosworth stepped in, providing a custom-built engine capable of pushing out over 800bhp, and the car was officially unveiled to the general public on the Maxxis stand at AutoSport International.
Maxxis is providing the team with the MA-Z1 Drift – which has shod drifting winners in the UK, Ireland, Europe and the USA in 2009 when teams using the purpose-designed drift tyre scooped the British Drift Championship, the European Drift Championship, the Prodrift Super Series and the Formula Drift championship. Luney says he is delighted to be using the tyre again this season.
The SATS Cosworth team aims to be the one to watch in the Maxxis British Drift Championship, which is the UK’s premier drifting competition and features some of Europe’s finest teams and drivers. SATS Motorsport finished fourth overall in the series in 2010 and is hoping that this year, with support from Cosworth and Maxxis, it will be able to clinch the top spot.
