Thai Bridgestone Plant to Feed Growing Global TBR Demand
Daily output of truck and bus tyres at Bridgestone’s factory in Chonburi, Thailand is set to increase over the next three or so years. The Japanese tyre maker states it will invest approximately 16.6 billion yen (₤125.6 million) to increase daily TBR production capacity from 8,000 to around 10,500 units by the first half of 2014.
The Chonburi plant, some sixty kilometres from Bangkok, is operated by Bridgestone Tire Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. and entered production in 2004 as a base for exporting truck and bus radials to the Americas, Europe and nearby Asian countries. As of 2010, approximately 1,400 workers were employed at the plant and Bridgestone has not commented whether this number will increase in line with Chonburi’s growing daily output.
The decision to expand production was taken in response to expectations that global TBR demand will increase over the medium to long term, and Bridgestone comments that investments in facilities such as this show it is “well positioned to respond to rapidly changing market trends.” The tyre maker says it will continue to build or expand production facilities as necessary to meet worldwide, however it has not disclosed the location or nature of any upcoming projects.
