General Introduces ‘Severe Service’ Tyre
General Truck Tires is offering severe service and construction vehicle fleet operators in the NAFTA region a new all-position wide base tyre intended for super single fitment on steer and trailer positions. Named the Grabber OA (Off Road, All Position) Wide Base, the tyre is being introduced in size 445/65R22.5 during November and two further additions to the range will be made in 2011.
As General Tire comments, fleets operating in severe service and construction applications, such as fire service, waste hauling and concrete mixing, need confidence that their tyres can handle heavy loads and stand up to off-road conditions. To address this need, the Continental Tire the Americas brand has incorporated a high carrying capacity and reinforced shoulder into the Grabber OA’s design to help protect against curbing and abrasions. A tread depth of 21/32nds (16.67mm) is also employed along with a cut- and chip-resistant compound, thereby assuring, as director of marketing for truck tyres Clif Armstrong notes, that customers can depend on this tyre for long lifetimes.
“The Grabber OA draws on nearly a century of tough General tyre heritage to bring advanced durability to our on/off road customers,” said Armstrong. “Now by adding wide base sizes to our product portfolio, these drivers can depend on the Grabber OA Wide Base to handle even higher payloads and help them operate quickly and efficiently in severe conditions.”
The Grabber OA Wide Base carries up to 12,800 pounds/5,800 kilograms in a super single fitment. The tyre is described as featuring deep grooves in the tread elements and an aggressive pattern to help improve traction on soft soil and muddy roadways, and a thick undertread that resists casing penetrations from stones and other debris often found in off-road applications, allowing for multiple retreads.
